Research Biobank

Research Biobank (RB) Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FMUI) and Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (CMH) is a unit which aims to support many types of basic and translational research.

Research Biobank is a type of Biorepository that stores human biological samples for use in research. The samples are derived from patients whom operated with diagnostic or therapeutic purposes and already giving their consent for storing of their tissues in RB.

Collections of RB are frozen tissue without fixative and tissues stored in the form of formalin fixed paraffin embedded blocks. Each specimen has clinical/pathological data regarding age, sex, histopathology diagnosis, and appropriate clinical data. RB keeps these specimens in good condition until researchers need them to conduct a test, do an experiment, or perform an analysis.

RB will have website in which researchers could look at the list of various specimen that available in RB, and they can order the specimen via on line too. Variety of medical students from all level, health care researcher, and scientist will be benefit from the services RB offered.

The main activities of RB are biospecimen collecting, processing, storing, distributing and destructing. Ethical, bioethical and legal issue should be clearly well conducted. Each biospecimen collected should have informed consent for donating and research usage.

Collections of RB are fresh-frozen tissue and formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue from which many types of study can be carried out, from histopathology, immunohistology, molecular and genetic studies, etc. Each specimen has clinical/pathological data regarding age, sex, histopathological diagnosis, and appropriate clinical data.

RB keeps these specimens in proper condition until researchers need them to conduct a test, do an experiment, or perform an analysis.
Currently, information of RB is available in http://research.fk.ui.ac.id/biobank and still under development. In the website researchers will also be able to look at the list of various specimen collection in RB, and they can request the specimen by submitting their Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved research proposal.

RB Committee may approve or refuse the proposal. Variety of medical students from all level, health care researchers and scientists will benefit from RB services.
The presence of RB will hopefully improve the quality and quantity of research in FMUI/CMH, and eventually Indonesia, that will beneficial for Indonesian patients. In the future, valid researches will depend on good quality biospecimen from a well established and accredited biobanking. Let’s build our biobanking future together.
